Backpacking in Sydney | Travel & Leisure

The Blue Mountains in Sydney Australia.

Every year, many thousands of travelers pass through Sydney in Australia on a backpacking trip of a lifetime. So why is Sydney such a great place to go on your trip? We?re going to look at a few reasons as to why Sydney is top of so many people?s must visit cities, and why it makes such a great base for a backpacking trip in Australia.

If you?re planning to visit Australia and would like to spend some time in Sydney, then hopefully this guide will help you out. If you?ve been to Sydney and have some great tips for fellow travelers, then please feel free to leave them in the comments section, we?d love to hear from you!

Getting To Sydney
Sydney is one of the most accessible places in Australia, making it the first stop for many travelers as they begin their adventure around Sydney. Once in town there are many options for continuing your journey. Budget airline Virgin Blue is based in Sydney, offering some fantastic deals for internal flights. If you?re looking for a cheaper option, there are plenty of coach companies providing cost effective travel to many destinations across Australia. In terms of getting around the city, things couldn?t be easier. Your best option is to purchase a travel card which will get you on all the local trains and ferry services across the harbour.

Places to Stay
For the budget conscious backpacker, Sydney has plenty of choice when it comes to hostels and cheaper accommodation. Because of Sydney?s popularity with backpackers, most hostels will give you a cheap place to stay and the chance to meet plenty of other travelers whilst you?re at it. Some of the best hostels are based in the vicinity of Sydney?s central station, as that is definitely where the action?s at. For the most fun we?d highly recommend finding a hostel in that area. Prices do vary from place to place, so if you can it?s a great idea to have a quick search on Google to see what?s on offer.

Things to Do and See
If you?re spending some time in Sydney, then you might be interested in what the place has to offer. There are certain things that you should definitely not miss, one of those being a trip to the Blue Mountains. Situated a couple of hours outside Sydney, the Blue Mountains are packed full of stunning views and scenery that will literally blow your mind. The mountains can be reached by a coach and train journey, part of which is covered if you buy the travel card we mentioned above. Bargain!

Within Sydney itself, it?s well worth exploring the other side of the harbour and spending the afternoon relaxing in Manly Bay. The beach here is stunning and stretches out for miles, with plenty of cool bars and cafes along the way to keep you entertained and your thirst quenched. If you?ve got a bit of cash to splash and fancy doing something a bit more upbeat, then why not walk to the top of the harbour bridge? If you?ve got a good head for heights then you won?t be disappointed. Probably best to avoid if you suffer from vertigo!
