Apple Purchases Large Amounts Of LTE Patents To Prepare For ...

The big battle between Apple and Samsung doesn?t seem to be over.? With the recent loss of Samsung in the Northern District Court of California, it seems that the Korean giant is looking to even it out with Apple.? Numerous reports suggest that the next iPhone will feature LTE technology.? We have seen LTE technology being introduced in Apple?s ?new? iPad (iPad 3) that was released earlier this year.? Folks have been quite impressed with how LTE performed in the iPad 3.? Now Apple might be looking to introduce LTE to one of its best selling products, the iPhone.

Samsung has already released a statement not too long ago to Korea Times, stating that they are already preparing to sue Apple if the next iPhone has LTE in it.? Samsung owns about a 12.7% stake in LTE patents world-wide, and is not afraid to use what it owns to take down Apple.? So to be on the safe side, Apple has recently made a purchase of mass amounts of LTE patents, according to a new report by ChosunIlbo.

Samsung Electronics had 819 (12.7 percent) to rank first, followed by the U.S. patent company InterDigital with 780 patents (12.1 percent). China?s Huawei ranked fifth with 402 (6.2 percent).

Apple only developed 44 of it 318 LTE patents itself and bought the rest from Nortel and Freescale last year. Patent enforcement firm Rockstar Bidco, in which Apple holds a majority stake, owns another 116 LTE patents, giving Apple 434 in all.

?This shows that Apple has been taking strategic steps to acquire intellectual property to prepare for potential legal disputes before it launches its own LTE smartphones,? said a KIPO official.

Currently, Apple now holds 4.9 percent of total LTE patents (318 patents), which is up from zero last year.? Even though Apple may be holding 4.9 percent LTE patent stake, Samsung clearly has many more in hand, at a whopping 12.7%.? The Korean giant has already stated it will use full force on Apple and sue them for as much as possible if they were to introduce LTE in their next iPhone.

Should Apple be worried?
