Digital publishing is the process of converting publications into applications or software that can run in different gadgets such as mobile phones and computers. It is so different from the traditional publishing since it requires mark-up languages to convert the materials.

People use applications to be able to able to produce digital magazines but there are websites as well that caters the job. There are companies that teach people about online magazine software that converts publications into digital formats. Some websites though made it their business to convert different publications for users.

Forms of Digital Publications

  1. E-Magazines. Also referred to as ?e-zine? or electronic magazine. This type of format enabled companies to produce digital magazines that look exactly as the traditional ones, only they can be read through the use of different gadgets. All the photos and the magazine layouts are like the ones we see on printed magazines. Marketers have found this to be a big help when it comes to gaining more consumers.
  2. Digital newsletter. Because of the digital era, a person can just simply open his e-mail and read newspapers or any publication of his interest. The best thing that people love about newsletters is that they can read them wherever they are, in their most convenient time. This way, they are always updated about their area of interests.
  3. Online Catalogue. They are catalogues used mostly by online libraries and online shops. You can find available books and information materials by the use of online libraries. These catalogues have enabled us to do online shopping as well.
  4. E-books. Electronic books are most of all helpful for students. These types of books are available online so you don?t have to scan through numbers of books on the shelf and fall in line to pay for it in a bookstore counter.

Most of these software can simply be downloaded from the web. That way, you will be able to reopen the software and read it again even if you?re not connected to the Internet. Downloading does not take that long since these formats are not big in size. There are online articles though that you can just simply read over the Internet. Some companies allow you to subscribe to their magazines and other publications for free. They are delivered straight to your e-mail.

Online publishing has gained a lot of attention from marketing companies since it enables faster distribution through electronic mails. A number of amateur writers have seen this as their opportunity as well to be able to easily publish their works. This has enabled some to make profit of their talents. Some websites allow individuals to publish their works in their websites.

Education only panacea for all ills of Pakistan | PakMed Info Forum ...

KARACHI ? Karachi University (KU) Vice Chancellor Muhammad Qaiser has said that knowledge is the only solution to all problems of Pakistan.
He said without making progress in the education sector the country cannot attain the desired development. Now the progresses of nations in the world are measured with reference to the education, while nations are known for their achievements in education, health and science and technologies, he said, while speaking at an inaugural ceremony of four-day 13th international symposium on natural product held on Saturday morning. The symposium was organised by International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), Karachi University (KU). About 600 delegates from 40 countries are participating in the global moot, inaugurated by KU Vice Chancellor.
The KU Vice Chancellor said that there is a dire need to make our country stronger through science and technology to fight against the enemies of the country and humanity. He said, ?In the today?s world, nations are known for their achievements in education. Development is no more considered to be the development of infrastructure, roads, dams, and bridges. The whole notion of development has been changed. It is now defined and measured with reference to the education, enlightenment, tolerance, self-fulfilment and productivity. The University of Karachi rightly takes pride to be the venue of the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences. This institution is a major source of strength for the university. We are also pleased to learn that the ICCBS has been selected as one of the five centres of excellence by the OIC. This is indeed an honour for the University of Karachi, and for the nation at large.?
Former Higher Education Commission Chairman Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rahman said that around 54 per cent of Pakistani nation is below the age of 19, which is the real wealth of the country; science can bridge the gape between people of different races, languages, countries and regions, as science is beyond boundaries. He said that science can make all countries closer in the world, which is the miracle of science. Knowledge is the only key driver to get socio-economic progress in the world. He said, ?Pakistani population is attributed with the large segment of youth, which is the real wealth of the country. Strong educational and research institutions play a crucial role in the development of any nation by providing world class human resources.?
ICCBS Director Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry said ICCBS has become the largest and finest institutions in this region. In last two years, we increased our PhD enrolment from 310 to 480, expanded our international collaboration with 23 new MoUs, welcomed over 180 foreign scholars from some 50 nations, published over 600 international research papers, patented 20 new findings internationally and established several new institutions, he added.
?The aim of the symposium was to bring together the leading experts in the field of natural products sciences from all around the world and form global partnership for sustainable utilisation of natural resources for the common benefits of humanity and rapid development of the countries in the south,? he said. From 1971 to date, Dr Rahman is the soul behind the miracle of ICCBS. From little known institution to one of the most prestigious research establishments of the world, is the miracle of Prof Atta?s leadership and his lifelong efforts, he said and added that the ICCBS is the bright face of our nation, an institution par excellence, a place where scholars of all continents and nations dream to visit, a model for others to follow, an oasis in the waste desert of ignorance. The ICCBS is not an institution, it is the spirit of Pakistan, and proof of what Pakistani nation can do under the right leadership, he said.
Meanwhile, 70th birthday of Dr Atta-ur-Rahman, ICCBS patron-in-chief, University of Karachi and former Chairman Higher Education Commission was also celebrated on the same day at Multipurpose Hall just after the inaugural session of the 13th international symposium. On the occasion, the colleagues, students, friends and scholar expressed their views about the services and personality of the great scientist. Prof Rahman also cut the cake among the hundreds of people. During the ceremony, the book titled, ?Atta-ur-Rahman: Ik Ehed Saaz Shakhsiat?, written by ICCBS Director Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry, was also launched.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Iqbal said he was pleased to report here that we are not the one only celebrating the 70th birthday of the great scientist Atta-ur-Rahman; the scientists of the whole world of science, and hundreds of students of Prof. Atta-ur-Rahman, spread in five continents, and belonging to all castes and creeds, are celebrating the 70th birthday of this legend in his life time.

Ex-Stanford exec gets three years prison for obstruction

(Reuters) - A former top executive at Allen Stanford's now-defunct financial firm was sentenced on Thursday to three years in prison for obstructing a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission probe into the disgraced financier's estimated $7.2 billion Ponzi scheme.

Laura Pendergest-Holt, 39, had pleaded guilty in June to one count of obstruction of justice, after originally facing 21 counts including fraud and conspiracy.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement, and was imposed by U.S. District Judge David Hittner in Houston.

Pendergest-Holt had been chief investment officer at Stanford Financial Group, where prosecutors said Allen Stanford ran a two-decade fraud centered on bogus certificates of deposits from his Antigua-based Stanford International Bank.

In her plea, Pendergest-Holt admitted to concealing details about the bank's investments that she knew the SEC wanted.

Prosecutors said she did this to impede the regulator's probe and keep Stanford's bank in operation.

Hittner also sentenced Pendergest-Holt to three years of supervised release. The defendant was not fined, but was taken into immediate custody following Thursday's hearing.

Before Stanford's fraud was uncovered in 2009, Pendergest-Holt had had a love affair with James Davis, Stanford's former chief financial officer and the government's main witness in the case against the former billionaire.

"She feels terrible about ever getting involved with Robert Allen Stanford and Jim Davis and that people were ever defrauded by them," Chris Flood, a lawyer for Pendergest-Holt, said in a phone interview. "She lost everything herself in the CD program, and was a victim."

Stanford is serving a 110-year prison sentence following his conviction in March on 13 criminal counts.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin on September 28 for a criminal trial of two former Stanford accounting executives, Mark Kuhrt and Gilberto Lopez.

The case is U.S. v. Stanford et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas, No. 09-cr-00342.

Nintendo Wii U gets December 8th release date for Japan: 26,260 yen for basic set, 31,500 yen for premium

Nintendo Wii U heading to Japan on December 8th 26,260 yen for basic set, 31,500 yen for premium

The Nintendo Wii U arrives on Japanese shores on December 8th starting at 26,260 yen (around $340), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced this morning via Nintendo Direct's video stream. A presentation later today in New York City starring Nintendo of America prez Reggie Fils-Aime will reveal pricing and release dates for the rest of the world, but you'd be right in guessing it won't be too far from the Japanese launch.

A basic set (only in white) and premium set (only in black) were revealed, with the darker option adding more storage; 32GB, up from from 8GB on the cheaper bundle. The Premium set (priced at 31,500 yen, or about $405) consists of the console, GamePad, a charging stand, play stand, and yet another stand for the Wii U itself. Those GamePads will also be available standalone for 13,440 yen, which could see American gamers paying around $173 for the luxury of a spare.

The Wii U pro controllers are priced at 5,040 yen ($65) each, while the Wiimote will continue to be priced at 3,800 yen (around $50), now in a range of colors. Likewise, the nunchucks will come in three color palettes. The GamePad charging stand will also be available to buy separately -- setting you back around 1,870 yen -- around $25. Naturally, there's going to be some international variance in these prices so we'll be updating once we get those global prices cemented.

We've been given a little more detail on the technical specifics too, with the Wii U packing 1GB of its own ("main") memory alongside 1GB for running games. Two titles, New Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land will both debut alongside the console -- we're expecting to hear even more software details later today.

Ben Gilbert contributed to this post.

Chicago teachers strike: Talks 'at the brink' of deal

Sitthixay Ditthavong / AP

Public school teachers rallying at Chicago's Congress Plaza protest against billionaire Hyatt Hotel mogul Penny Pritzker, who is also a member of the Chicago Board of Education on Thursday.

By NBCChicago.com

The Chicago Teachers Union strike will continue for at least another day, completing a full week that public school students have been kept out of class, NBCChicago.com reported?early?Friday.

However, there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel to end the city's first strike in 25 years.

Following another marathon day of negotiations, school board President Dave Vitale and Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis emerged separately from the Hilton Chicago at around 1 a.m. Friday and said they were very close to a deal.

"We've got some number-crunching to do overnight and we'll be back here tomorrow to see if we can't finish this up hopefully tomorrow," Vitale said. "I think we've got a general understanding of what we'd like to do if the numbers work."

Lewis said a House of Delegates meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. would go on as scheduled, as the only information those members have is what has been reported in the media.

She said she remained hopeful that students and teachers could return to class on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Chicago Public Schools spokeswoman Becky Carroll said the parties were "at the brink? of getting all the key issues addressed.

theGrio: 'Safe havens' for kids offered during Chicago teachers strike

Carroll said the main sticking points are still the evaluation system and the union's demands that laid-off teachers get top consideration for rehiring.

"We've made many modifications over the last several days to our proposal,'' Carroll said. "We feel that we're there. And at this point, it's in the CTU's hands to bring it to a close."

Under an old proposal, the union estimated that 6,000 teachers could lose their jobs within two years.

'A sense of urgency'
A more recent offer included provisions that would protect tenured teachers from dismissal in the first year of the evaluations.

It also altered categories that teachers can be rated on and added an appeals process. Additionally, evaluations could work on a graduated scale throughout the term of the contract, comprising between 25 and 35 percent of a teacher's total score.

"There's a sense of urgency today,'' said the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who stopped by the hotel where the negotiators were working Thursday and spoke to reporters. A day earlier, he said the two sides were talking past each other.

Read more from NBCChicago.com

Ahead of morning negotiations, Lewis expressed hope the opposing sides could soon resolve their differences.

"Oh, I'm praying, praying, praying. I'm on my knees for that, please," Lewis said. "Yes, I'm hoping for Monday. That would be good for us."

Question at heart of Chicago strike: How do you measure teacher performance?

Thousands of teachers walked off the job Monday after months of negotiations failed to result in a new contract. It's the city's first teacher strike since October 1987.

As teachers plan for another day on the picket lines, CPS extended the hours at its 147 strike-designated "Children First" sites beginning Thursday.

NHL and union plan to meet Wednesday in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL and the players' association will resume negotiations on Wednesday in an effort to avoid a lockout this weekend.

After not meeting face to face since last Friday, the sides planned to get together at the league office in New York before the NHLPA holds player meetings later Wednesday.

The NHL board of governors will convene on Thursday with Commissioner Gary Bettman, while the union holds a second day of discussions with as many as 250 players.

The hastily scheduled negotiating session for Wednesday came just hours after NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said owners and players were both to blame for their failure to reach a new collective bargaining agreement before current deal expires on Saturday.

Daly wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday that he hoped both sides would meet before Saturday, but didn't sound optimistic it would happen.

"To this point, we have received no indication that the union has anything new to say to us. And right now, we have nothing new to say to them," he wrote Tuesday. "It's unfortunate, but it's the reality of the situation."

That changed Tuesday night. Whether the restart of talks will lead to a quick resolution remains to be seen. The NHL's labor contract expires at midnight Saturday night, and a lockout seems likely. It would be the league's fourth work stoppage since 1992.

"Ultimately, we just want to negotiate a fair deal that will give all our clubs an ability to be stable and healthy," Daly wrote. "We hoped (and still hope) we can do that without causing any interruption to the upcoming season. Logic would have suggested we would have been able to. The fact that we haven't yet is extremely disappointing, and is a failure for which we both must share blame."

Several hundred players are set to attend the NHLPA meetings Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the current state of CBA negotiations.

The board of governors could authorize Bettman to proceed with a lockout on Saturday if a new collective bargaining agreement hasn't been reached.

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask fears the season will be delayed.

"I hear November, December and New Year's," he said Monday at Boston's annual golf pre-camp golf tournament. "But no one really knows."

Donald Fehr, who took over as union head two years ago, said his players are resigned to a work stoppage, which would follow lockouts last year in the NFL and the NBA.

Many of those players will gather in Manhattan this week in this offseason's biggest show of force. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby, one of the league's biggest stars, is one of them. He skated on Tuesday with some of his Penguins teammates in suburban Pittsburgh and expects to be in New York on Wednesday.

Industry revenue has grown from $2.1 billion to $3.3 billion annually under the expiring deal. Owners asked players to cut their share of hockey related revenue from 57 to 43 percent, and then modified their offer to 46 percent during a six-year proposal. Players are concerned management hasn't addressed its problems by re-examining the teams' revenue-sharing format.

The sides haven't had a full bargaining session since Aug. 31 and the strife is threatening regular-season openers scheduled to start Oct. 11. The preseason schedule is set to begin on Sept. 19.

An 11-day strike in April 1992 caused 30 games to be postponed, and a 103-day lockout in 1994-95 caused the cancellation of 468 games and delayed the season's start until Jan. 20. The 2004 lockout started Sept. 16 when training camps were to open, as they are this year, and wasn't settled until July 13.
