Recipes of dead celebrities featured in new book (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Comedian Frank DeCaro is best known for his stint on "The Daily Show with John Stewart" but the comedian and talk radio host is now dishing out recipes.

In his third book, "The Dead Celebrity Cookbook: A Resurrection of Recipes From More Than 145 Stars of Stage and Screen," DeCaro provides the ingredients for actress Mae West's fruit compote and comedian John Ritter's favorite fudge along with other recipes from deceased stars.

The 49-year-old performer spoke to Reuters about his inspiration for the book, how he found the recipes and which are his favorites.

Q: Where did the idea for the book come from?

A: "When I was at Northwestern University in the early 1980s, my friends threw a 'dead celebrity' party. All the guests came dressed as stars who had gone to the great studio commissary in the sky. Everyone from Adam and Eve to Sid and Nancy were at that party. Our host was dressed as Judy Garland and carried a pill bottle that read "Take until dead." It was one of the best parties I've ever been to. We didn't have any 'dead celebrity' food at that party, though, and that sort of planted the seed for the 'Dead Celebrity Cookbook.'"

Q: There are over 145 recipes. How did you get them?

A: "Ever since that party, I've been collecting out-of- print cookbooks, supermarket flyers, spiral-bound manuals that came in microwave ovens in 1975, old magazines -- anything that has a celebrity recipe in it. I curated the recipes from those sources, borrowing the lists of ingredients and rewriting the instructions so they made sense for modern home cooks."

Q: Do you know if any of these celebrities actually cooked the dishes?

A: "I certainly think they enjoyed them, even if someone else did the cooking. (Michael) Jackson was said to love sweet potato pie. Who doesn't? Gary Coleman's recipe (chicken vegetable soup) had a note attached that suggested it was one he grew up eating. As for Miss Crawford, I'd very much like to believe Joan poached her own salmon, if you'll pardon the expression."

Q: How did you decide to organize and categorize them all?

A: "In a way that made sense to me as a lover of pop culture, and in a way in which readers could best appreciate the celebrities themselves and the amazing work they did while they were alive."

Q: Have you baked any of the recipes yourself?

A: "I taste-tested about a third of them, some of are really delicious; some, not so much."

Q: Do you have a personal favorite?

A: "Liberace's sticky buns! I made 24 of them and ate nine before they were cool enough to handle. They're so good!"

Q: Who is this book for? Movie and TV buffs, food-lovers, pop culture aficionados, those who collect Hollywood memorabilia or your gay best friends?

A: "I did this book for home cooks with a sense of humor. Pop culture junkies will love the chance to reminisce about stars. But really, I wrote it for people who don't know who these celebrities are: younger readers, for instance. I hope they discover these stars and their work through this book."

Q: Any plans for follow-up cookbooks?

A: "This is only the first in what I hope will be a series of 'Dead Celebrity Cookbooks.' It may have an irreverent title, but the book is a love letter to the stars. It's important to me that audiences don't forget these incredibly talented people. They may be gone, but their work -- and their recipes -- lives on."

Facebook News Feed to get ads in 2012

Facebook

By Athima Chansanchai

In the next year, as if your News Feed isn't already cluttered enough, Facebook will now add sponsored ads into the mix.

That's right, if you like a Facebook page, the News Feed will generate a message every time you mention the "liked" brand or business. This shows up your News Feed as well as your friends'.

They also appear as "Sponsored Stories" on the right column of your Facebook pages, "where you may be more likely to discover new things that your friends are interested in."?These work similar to other ads, it seems, except that your name will appear in your friends' feed, to better catch their attention.

As the video on the sponsored stories Facebook page explains, friends are likely to be at least somewhat more influential than others in money-spending decisions. (Though others may balk at having their friends?? or themselves?? co-opted for advertising purposes.)

TechCrunch?says that there will be no more than one sponsored story in a News Feed per day, so that should assuage some clamor.

If, on the other hand, you wish to advertise your own branded page, Facebook will walk you through the steps to create a sponsored story, letting you figure out what your maximum budget will be, based on clicks you expect to get from it.?There are several different kinds of sponsored stories, as seen in?this guide.

Facebook

To add to the argument that these kinds of ads work, there are reports that show click-through rates have gone up. TBG Digital produced the "2011 Global Facebook Advertising Report," which?examined 255 billion impressions across 216 clients advertising on Facebook in 192 countries in the third quarter of this year. In that report, there was an?18.5 percent increase in click-through rates across five major markets from the second quarter of this year to the third quarter.

The report attributes the increased effectiveness of ads to sponsored story ads, based on those click-through rates and the more targeted means of reaching consumers by age, gender and interests.

Question is, will you be annoyed by those sponsored ads? Or does it work on you? Take our poll and let us know.

PFT: Bucs' free fall continues with 8th straight loss

AP-Top-scientists-endorse-HGH-test-R1FI8TC-x-largeGetty Images

The effort by Congress to compel the NFL and the NFLPA to follow through on their agreement to conduct HGH testing has petered out in recent weeks.? At a time when both sides have reason to be concerned about Congress opting to move aggressively regarding the inability of the parties to turn their agreement to conduct HGH testing into actual HGH testing, the latest effort from Capitol Hill looks more like window dressing than meaningful action.

Earlier this week, four doctors who serve in the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith urging the adoption of HGH testing.? The letter, signed by Dr. David ?Phil? Roe (R-Tenn.), Dr. John Fleming (R-La.), Dr. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), Dr. Donna Christensen (D-Virgin Islands), points out the risks and side effects of HGH (cancer, diabetes, hypertenson, harm to reproductive health, thyroid problems, and abnormal growth of bone and connective tissue).? The doctors also explain that HGH is normally prescribed only for patients in the late stages of AIDS, for children with growth hormone deficiency, and for treatment of certain types of pituitary tumors.

And then there?s the fact that HGH possession and use without a prescription is illegal.

But there?s no teeth to the letter or any of the other efforts to date from Congress.? The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform reportedly intends at some point to conduct public hearings and/or private efforts to gather information that could result in players being placed under oath about what they know about HGH us and how they or others get HGH, absent clear progress toward HGH testing.? As the offseason approaches, however, the likelihood of the NFL and the union working together to resolve the situation will increase.? Some believe that NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith has been trying to delay the issue until after his re-election in March 2012, given that a significant number of players are opposed to HGH testing of any kind.

Regardless, the new CBA clearly states that HGH testing will occur.? The only question is how it will happen.? To date, the NFLPA has refused to proceed with the procedure used by the World Anti-Doping Agency.? (Though the NFLPA has not suggested a test other than the WADA procedure, the NFLPA last month suggested a protocol premised on the WADA test.)? Congress has accused the NFLPA of dragging its feet, but the NFL likewise has failed to enforce the agreement via any of the available legal remedies for forcing a party to honor its written commitments.

Thus, the blame on this one cuts both ways.? The NFLPA has failed to honor its agreement, and the NFL has opted to merely sit back and wait for someone else to pressure the NFLPA to live up to its word.? If the NFL were genuinely serious about eradicating HGH from the game, the NFL would have pursued arbitration and/or litigation aimed at forcing the issue.

And if Congress were genuinely serious about it, they would be doing more than sending letters.

Barracuda babies: Novel study sheds light on early life of prolific predator

Friday, December 16, 2011

For anglers and boaters who regularly travel the coasts of Florida the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) is a common sight. Surprisingly, however, very little is known about the early life stage of this ecologically and socio-economically important coastal fish.

In the journal Marine Biology, lead author Dr. Evan D'Alessandro and University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science colleagues Drs. Su Sponaugle, Joel Llopiz and Robert Cowen shed light on the larval stage of this ocean predator, as well as several other closely related species.

"Due in large part to the expense and difficulty of collecting fish larvae from the open ocean, the larval ecology of barracuda were a mystery until now," said D'Alessandro. "A research study led by Dr. Robert Cowen, which sampled the Straits of Florida regularly for two years, provided a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of the larval life of many fishes."

The study samples included great barracuda (92.8%) and their relatives Sphyraena borealis and Sphyraena picudilla (6.6%), commonly known as sennets.

In their larval stage, which generally lasts several weeks, barracuda and sennets remain in the upper 25 m of the ocean and live on a similar diet. They start out consuming copepods, or small crustaceans, but make an early switch to a diet of fish larvae, much like several larval billfishes and tunas.

"Barracuda are an important element in the marine food chain; they are voracious predators of other fishes as juveniles and adults on reefs and other nearshore habitats. Now we know this holds true for their larval stage before they reach an inch in length, as well," said D'Alessandro. "This novel study unlocks important aspects of the barracuda's life cycle. It also identifies an important size advantage within the larval stage (bigger larvae are more likely to survive) and provides insight that resource managers can use to better manage this species."

Verizon Galaxy Nexus review

It's the Galaxy Nexus. It has LTE. It's the phone we've been waiting (and waiting) for. Sure, some of our more globe-trotting members of the staff were suitably sated by the HSPA+ version that shipped a few weeks ago, but the rest of us domestic types simply need more bandwidth. Or, at least, we like to think that we do, and this $300 (on-contract) Verizon release certainly has that in spades.

However, there's something missing: Google Wallet. That company's attempt at reinventing commerce isn't here and, while nobody's saying for sure, it surely has something to do with Verizon not wanting to kneecap the Isis payment service it has invested in. That leaves us wondering: with restrictions on what apps can be installed, and some rather prominent carrier branding on the back, is this really a Nexus device at all? And, more importantly, is it a good phone? Those answers and more wait for you below.

Samsung Transfix (Cricket Wireless)

The Samsung Transfix ($159.99 direct) is a midrange, keyboarded Android smartphone?for Cricket Wireless.

The Transfix measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs a surprisingly light 4.4 ounces. The phone slides open to reveal a four-row physical QWERTY keyboard with nicely sized keys, which makes the Transfix a good choice for frequent texters.

The phone is powered by an 800MHz processor, so it should be up to speed for most common tasks. It's also running Android 2.3 (Gingerbead), which should keep things moving smoothly and allows for compatibility with most of the 250,000+ apps in the Android Market.

Like most Android phones, the Transfix should be a good media player, and comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera that can record VGA video. The phone's 3.2-inch display features 320-by-480-pixel resolution. Battery life is rated at nearly four hours of talk time.

The Transfix runs on Cricket's 3G network, which works on the 850-, 1,900-, and 1,700-MHz bands, depending upon your location. Coverage is somewhat limited, so make sure to check the maps at?www.mycricket.com before buying in.

The Samsung Transfix looks like a good choice for frequent texters on Cricket, but make sure to take a look at the Samsung Indulge as well.

Investing in Education in Every State and District | ED.gov Blog

In September, President Obama introduced the American Jobs Act, which among other key investments to create jobs would invest $30 billion to repair and modernize public schools and community colleges and $30 billion to keep hundreds of thousands of teachers from facing layoffs.

But how would that really affect you? Earlier today the Department of Education released two interactive maps that will show you what the American Jobs Act could do for your state and local school district.

In conjunction with the new interactive maps, the Obama Administration also released a new report today that provides an analysis of the condition of America?s schools, which have fallen into disrepair, as well as the difficult budget environment facing school districts and teachers nationwide.
