FDA orders safety studies of women's surgical mesh

(AP) ? The Food and Drug Administration is ordering medical device manufacturers to study safety complications with surgical mesh widely used to repair women's pelvic problems.

The announcement follows an April FDA report which found that women who have the surgical mesh implanted to support their reproductive organs are at greater risk of pain, bleeding and infection than women who have traditional surgery with stitches.

The FDA said in an online post that 33 manufacturers of medical mesh would be required to submit follow-up safety studies to the agency. Manufacturers include Johnson & Johnson, Boston Scientific Corp. and CR Bard.

The FDA is considering reclassifying the mesh as a high-risk device, so that manufacturers would have to prove the product's safety and effectiveness before it could launch. The reclassification could take years.

Planet-hunters kick off 2012 with four new worlds

We're only a few days into 2012 and already some new exoplanet discoveries have been announced.

As 2011 ended, there were a total of 716 confirmed exoplanets and 2,326 planetary candidates, found by both orbiting space telescopes like Kepler and ground-based observatories. The pace of new discoveries has accelerated enormously in the past few years. Now there are four more confirmed exoplanets to add to the list.

The four planets, HAT-P-34b, HAT-P-35b, HAT-P-36b and HAT-P-37b, all have very tight orbits around their four different stars, taking only 5.5, 3.6, 1.3 and 2.8 days to complete an orbit. Compare that with Mercury, which takes 87.969 days to make one orbit ? and then 365 days, of course, for Earth.

    1. 2012's first meteor show sparks chills and thrills

They were found by astronomers with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, which operates a network of ground-based telescopes known as the HATNet project. The first exoplanet discovery by HATNet, the planet HAT-P-1b, was in 2006.

They are all "hot Jupiter" type planets, gas giants which orbit very close to their stars and so are much hotter than Earth, like Mercury in our own solar system. Mercury is a small rocky world, but in some alien solar systems, gas giants have been found orbiting just as close to their stars as Mercury is to our sun, or even closer. HAT-P-34b may have an "outer companion" and is in a very elongated orbit. The other three are more typical hot Jupiters. They were discovered using the transit method, when a planet is aligned in its orbit so that it passes in front of its star, from our viewpoint.

So what does this mean? If exoplanet discoveries continue to grow exponentially as expected, then 2012 should be a good year, not only for yet more new planets being found, but also for our understanding of these alien worlds and how such a wide variety of solar systems came to be. We?ve come a long way from 1992 and the first exoplanet discoveries. Things promise to only get more exciting in the future.

If you want to get your exoplanet news quickly this year, I recommend the Exoplanet App for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. You can also follow @ExoplanetApp on Twitter.

Broadway's 'Spider-Man' musical earns new record (AP)

NEW YORK ? Look who's sporting a big smile behind his mask on Broadway ? none other than the once-mocked Spider-Man.

The Broadway League reported Tuesday that "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" took in a whopping $2,941,790 over nine performances last week, which is the highest single-week gross of any show in Broadway history.

The musical shattered the old record held by "Wicked," which last January recorded the then-highest one-week take on Broadway with a $2,228,235 haul, though over an eight-show week.

"We knew the possibility," said Michael Cohl, one of the lead producers of "Spider-Man" along with Jeremiah "Jere" Harris. "I don't think that Jere or I really thought we'd ever get there but we're ecstatic that we did."

While the eight-versus-nine show disparity gives "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" something of an asterisk, the Spider-Man producers pointed out that head-to-head last week with "Wicked" over nine shows each, their musical handily won. "Wicked" took in $2,712,535 last week.

Both shows' haul reflect the use of premium seating, in which producers charge higher prices for certain days and certain seats. Also, "Wicked," which is performed at the Gershwin Theatre, has about 100 seats less than the 1,930-seat Foxwoods Theatre, home of the superhero musical.

The stunt-heavy Spider-Man show, which at $75 million makes it the costliest ever on Broadway, muscled to the top despite a turbulent history, including injuries to actors, delays in opening night, poor reviews and a record-breaking preview period. Many professional critics predicted its quick death.

While pleased by the success, the producers on Tuesday weren't doing a victory dance just yet. "The time to crow is when we have sustained longevity and we've returned the money to our investors," Harris said.

Many shows this holiday season added a ninth show to their regular eight-show week, and most had a happy holiday as a result, including "The Book of Mormon" with $1,752,601 over nine shows and "The Lion King" at $2,444,132 over nine performances. About a dozen shows were at or near full capacity.

"How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" with Daniel Radcliffe ending his Broadway run broke the box office record at the Hirschfield Theatre the week ending Sunday, grossing $1,910,224 over nine performances.

Hugh Jackman also ended his 10-week concert show run at the Broadhurst Theatre on Sunday after having earned $2,057,354 in its final nine performances, the highest weekly gross recorded by the Shubert Organization, which owns the Broadhurst and 16 other Broadway theaters.

The joy was felt north in Toronto, where "Mary Poppins" set a new Canadian record grossing $2,088,824.50 CDN during its nine performances ending Jan. 1, the highest single-week gross for a theatrical production in Canadian history.

The news wasn't all good for everyone. Producers of the musical "Lysistrata Jones" said Tuesday that they're pulling the plug on the Douglas Carter Beane-written comedy, and its last performance will be Sunday. It is the first Broadway casualty of the year,

The enduring financial success of the "Spider-Man" musical came despite a spring shake-up that led to the firing of Julie Taymor ? the original co-book writer and director ? and an overhaul of the plot and songs by U2's Bono and the Edge. Harris and Cohl jumped aboard the show relatively late on and had to make hard choices.

"We came into a very difficult situation. We've changed the team. We added players when we needed to. We've moved some players around to different positions. And the success we've had here is the culmination of all those people working hard to get done what we've gotten done," Harris said.

Cohl and Harris have said that their data on the audiences for "Spider-Man" indicate that half of all attendees had never been to a Broadway show before and more than half were from outside New York. They say it has been seen by more than 600,000 people during the past year.

The show has consistently grossed more than the $1.2 million each week the producers have indicated they need to stay viable and that has helped persuade Harris and Cohl to keep the show in New York, forgoing for now schemes to tour or franchise it.

The new record hasn't changed those plans and their work hasn't ended.

"Cohl and I both got up this morning ? we were emailing and texting each other first thing ? about next week," Harris said.

Logan Welles McFarland Wanted For Deadly Crime Spree

By PAUL FOY, Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY ? Authorities issued an arrest warrant for a suspect in the killing of an elderly Utah couple and the shooting of a woman outside a Nevada casino.

The warrant accuses Logan Welles McFarland, 24, of burglarizing the couple's Mount Pleasant home. They were found shot to death Saturday.

Police said a witness told them McFarland bragged at a Friday night party about obtaining money and firearms.

The warrant filed in court Tuesday says McFarland and a woman left in a stolen car for West Wendover, Nev., where police say they shot and wounded a woman in the head during a carjacking.

McFarland and suspect Angela Atwood were last seen in Nevada driving a stolen gray Volkswagen Jetta with Colorado license plate 725WHX, authorities said.

Atwood has not been charged. McFarland is being sought on suspicion of felony burglary, the warrant states.

Jewelry and other stolen items from the home of LeRoy and Ann Fullwood were found in the trunk of a car the suspects took from the Friday night party, police said.

The car was ditched about 45 miles away and a stolen Saturn sedan was allegedly used to drive to West Wendover. A receipt from a fast-food restaurant found in the car indicated the meal was paid for with LeRoy Fullwood's stolen credit card.

In West Wendover, Atwood tried to steal another car in a carjacking, police said. But the driver of that car resisted and was shot in the head.

The Jetta was then stolen in a motel parking lot.

'Paranormal Activity 4' gets October release date (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The next installment of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise will arrive in movie theaters this October -- a month that traditionally has been successful for the horror franchise -- Paramount Pictures said Wednesday.

The studio will release the fourth installment of its series on October 19.

The most recent "Paranormal" movie, this year's "Paranormal Activity 3," was released October 21. It opened to $54 million for the biggest October opening ever. The first "Paranormal," made for a mere $15,000, grossed $193.3 million worldwide. It was released the last week in September, 2009. The second, made for $3 million, grossed $177.5 million worldwide. It was released October 22, 2010.

"Paranormal 4" will open against "The Big Wedding," a romantic comedy from Lionsgate, and "Gangster Squad," a Warner Bros. crime drama.

TheWrap reported in October that a fourth "Paranormal" was all but certain.
