Spanish quake linked to groundwater pumping

Farmers and other residents pumping groundwater from Earth?s crust probably triggered an earthquake that killed nine people last year in southeastern Spain, scientists have found.

Sucking up water for decades would have unloaded stresses within the ground and hastened a quake that was likely to happen anyway, says Pablo Gonz?lez, a geologist at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.?

?Even without the groundwater extraction, the earthquake was overdue,? he says. But human activities provided ?a kind of triggering or controlling.?

Gonz?lez and his colleagues report the discovery online October 21 in Nature Geoscience.

Scientists know that people can change the rate of earthquakes by piling up water within the crust, such as behind a dam. Some researchers argue ? though it is not entirely accepted ? that filling a nearby reservoir may have set off the magnitude 7.9 quake that killed some 80,000 people in Sichuan, China, in 2008. Injecting water into the crust, such as during hydraulic fracturing or other drilling, can also trigger quakes; geothermal drilling operations in Basel, Switzerland, set off a small earthquake there in 2006.

Overall, these triggered tremors are usually quite small, on the order of magnitude 3. The quake that struck Lorca, Spain, on May 11, 2011, was magnitude 5.1. But that isn?t uncommon for that region of Spain, the most seismically active part of the country, Gonz?lez says.

Lorca is also a place where lots of water gets pumped from underground for farming and drinking. As a result, the land surface is subsiding at about 10 centimeters each year, the highest rate known in Europe.

When the quake hit, Gonz?lez and his colleagues decided to see whether there was any connection. They used satellite radar data to determine how the ground shifted before and after the quake, and then developed a mechanical model to explain what kind of ground stresses would cause that movement.

The quake struck at surprisingly shallow depths, just 2 to 4 kilometers down, the scientists found. The ground?s movement almost precisely matched the areas where stress had changed the most within Earth?s crust because of groundwater pumping, the team calculated. Both findings suggest that draining the aquifers pushed the crust over some threshold and accelerated the quake, Gonz?lez says.

Stress changes caused by groundwater extraction are tiny compared with the usual stress brought about by tectonic forces. That?s why it would have been hard to predict the Lorca quake based just on groundwater use, Gonz?lez says. And the findings probably don?t apply to other quake-prone areas where groundwater is also being pumped. ?If the fault is not located right on the border of the aquifers where you have the changes in water level, it would probably not have much effect,? he says.

The new study is the first to show how changing stresses within the crust by removing water ? as opposed to adding it, through drilling or dams ? can trigger earthquakes. That finding underscores how little scientists still know about the consequences of messing with the crust, writes Caltech geologist Jean-Philippe Avouac in a commentary accompanying the study.

?We know how to start earthquakes,? Avouac writes, ? but we are still far from being able to keep them under control.?

Clashes break out in Beirut after slain official's funeral

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Gunmen exchanged fire in southern districts of Beirut overnight after the state funeral of an assassinated Lebanese intelligence chief ended in violence when angry mourners broke away and tried to storm the offices of Prime Minister Najib Mikati.

Sunday's clashes fed into a growing political crisis in Lebanon linked to the civil war in neighboring Syria.

Opposition leaders and their supporters accuse Syria of being behind the car bombing that killed Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan on Friday. They say Mikati is too close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Lebanese ally Hezbollah, which is part of Mikati's government.

Thousands turned out in downtown Beirut's Martyrs' Square for Hassan's funeral, which also served as a political rally. The violence erupted after an opposition leader demanded that Mikati step down to pave the way for talks on the crisis.

A group marched to the prime minister's office, then overturned barriers, pulled apart barbed wire coils and threw steel rods, stones and bottle at soldiers and police.

Security forces responded by shooting into air and firing teargas, forcing the protesters to scatter.

On Sunday night, gunmen armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades exchanged fire in southern districts of Beirut, security sources said, and residents could hear the sound of ambulance sirens.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the clashes in the capital, but in the northern city of Tripoli a 9-year-old girl was killed by a sniper and several people were wounded in clashes.

Gunmen have been patrolling the streets in Tripoli, scene of previous clashes between Sunnis and Alawites sympathetic to different sides in the Syria war.

Opposition leader Saad al-Hariri urged supporters to refrain from any more violence.

"We want peace, the government should fall but we want that in a peaceful way. I call on all those who are in the streets to pull back," Hariri said on the Future Television channel.

SECTARIAN TENSIONS

Sunday's events highlighted how the 19-month-old uprising against Assad has sharpened deep-seated sectarian tensions in Lebanon, which is still scarred from its 1975-90 civil war.

Sunni-led rebels are fighting to overthrow Assad, who is from the Alawite minority, which has its roots in Shi'ite Islam. Lebanon's religious communities are divided between those that support Assad and those that back the rebels.

Hassan, 47, was a senior intelligence official who had helped uncover a bomb plot that led to the arrest and indictment in August of a pro-Assad former Lebanese minister.

A Sunni Muslim, he also led an investigation that implicated Syria and the Shi'ite Hezbollah in the 2005 assassination of Rafik al-Hariri, a former prime minister of Lebanon.

Damascus and Hezbollah have condemned Hassan's killing.

But mourners at Martyrs' Square accused Syria of involvement and called for Mikati to quit. One banner read "Go, go Najib" echoing the slogans of the Arab Spring.

The violence broke out after Fouad al-Siniora, a former prime minister, said the opposition rejected any dialogue to overcome the political crisis caused by Hassan's killing unless the government first resigned.

"No talks before the government leaves, no dialogue over the blood of our martyrs," Siniora said to roars of approval from the crowd.

Mikati said on Saturday he had offered to resign to make way for a government of national unity, but that he had accepted a request by President Michel Suleiman to stay in office to allow time for talks on a way out of the political crisis.

Olympic star Missy Franklin commits to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) ? Olympic star Missy Franklin has verbally committed to attend the University of California, ending the pursuit of one of the most sought after swimming recruits.

"Committed to swim at Cal Berkeley! I am officially a baby Golden Bear?????? I am so honored to be a part of such a special team! (hash)GoBears," Franklin tweeted Saturday.

Franklin will be reunited with Cal coach Teri McKeever, who directed the U.S. women's team at the London Olympics, where Franklin won five medals. The 17-year-old won the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events, earned gold medals in the 400 medley and 800 freestyle relays, and a bronze in the 400 freestyle relay.

Franklin will join Olympic teammate Rachel Bootsma on the Bears. Natalie Coughlin and Dana Vollmer, two of her other Olympic teammates, starred at Cal.

Franklin, a senior at Regis Jesuit High in Aurora, Colo., had made earlier recruiting visits to Georgia and Texas. As a result of her decision, Franklin won't make a scheduled visit to Southern California.

Cal can't comment on the commitment until Franklin signs a letter of intent.

Franklin only plans to swim collegiately for her first two years, and then will turn pro in 2015, ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics, according to Swimming World.

Gallery Highlights | 10.18.2012 - Scrapbook Update

Welcome to Gallery Highlights for this week!

This week?s finds include some very special layouts that are sure to inspire you. I was very inspired by both the soft textures and the topics of the layouts I found this week. And it?s almost that time ? I?m going to keep including holiday projects every week. ?Let?s go take a look at them and I hope you like them all as much as I do. Don?t forget ? You can click on the links to visit the layouts in their galleries and view supply lists, leave a comment for the designer, or view the designer?s other work.

Annie and Daisy?by mamabean

Carolynn?s layout inspired me so much. The soft papers she used, the cool color palette and her delicate embellishments all create a wonderful sense of love and family. And look at her layering techniques! This is just a gorgeous layout.

Hello Fall by naomiatkins

Naomi did a beautiful job with this fall-themed layout. The photo is full of bright colors but the overall feel of the layout is soft and gentle. She used muted brown and orange shades of paper and added die-cuts with the same soft colors, as well as adding in some even softer, lighter pieces of kraft paper and embellishments. Beautiful!

This is Me by Patricia

Patricia?s idea to scrap an All About Me about herself, including small square photos with captions underneath to give us a snapshot of who she is right now, is very inspiring. Years down the road, her family is going to absolutely treasure layouts like this. Her design is just as wonderful ? she created two columns of photos and captions and layered them over some soft papers and embellishments. She added her title and then another column of just embellishments on the other side of the page which adds balance and interest ? I love everything about this page.

Negative by tracermajig

The design of Trace?s layout is simply gorgeous and drew me in immediately. Her blending techniques are outstanding and allow the soft papers and textures to really shine. But what really moved me was her photo and journaling. She is not afraid to scrap the difficult parts of her life and she does it so beautifully and eloquently. She?s an inspiration all around and I?m so thrilled that she chose to share this layout.

It?s Christmas by sstringfellow

And oh my gosh, how adorable is this little mouse! I?ve included two of Susan?s cards this week because she has done a tremendous job of showcasing one stamp used two different ways. In this first card, she stamped the adorable skating mouse and colored it with watercolors. She placed the stamp over an?accordion-folded circle and then layered that over some holiday-themed paper and a burlap ribbon.

It?s Christmas by sstringfellow

In Susan?s second card, she used the same?skating mouse stamp but watercolored it very differently and then used crisp, colorful flags and clean white punched cardstock borders at the top of her card. The effect is clean and simple and absolutely adorable. I?m always a fan of finding ways to use supplies in varied ways and these cards are a great example of that.

And there you have them -?our gallery highlights for the week! As I say every week, I really wish we had time and space to feature more of the amazing designs out there. ?Thanks so much to all of the designers who shared their work with us this week. What were your favorite gallery layouts last week? Feel free to link us to them in the comments and let us know what you think and which are your current favorites in the galleries!

Harsh rebel rhetoric as Colombian peace talks open

HURDAL, Norway (AP) ? Colombia's first peace talks in a decade were inaugurated Thursday a half world away with a demonstration of just how widely the two sides differ on how to end a vexing, nearly five-decade-old conflict.

The Oslo talks were brief, symbolic and largely perfunctory. Held at a secret venue, they lasted seven hours and were followed by word that substantive talks will begin Nov. 15 in the Cuban capital of Havana. The next round will tackle "comprehensive agrarian development," though little else appears to have been agreed upon.

The government's lead negotiator, Humberto de la Calle, sought to set a businesslike, cordial tone in brief remarks at a joint news conference at a lakeside hotel north of Oslo. He said the government seeks "mutual dignified treatment" in the talks and doesn't expect the sides to see eye-to-eye ideologically.

His opposite number from the Western Hemisphere's last remaining major insurgency, Ivan Marquez, said the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, had come to Oslo "with an olive branch."

Then he began railing against Colombia's "corrupt oligarchy," its alleged masters in Washington, "state-sponsored violence," the government's "deceptive and backward" land policies, and the "vampires" of transnational oil and mining that FARC says are ravaging the nation.

"We want to denounce the crime of capitalism and neo-liberalism," Marquez said during a 35-minute discourse that denounced some companies and individuals by name, including a cousin of President Juan Manuel Santos and a relative of one of the government negotiators.

Members of the government team, separated from the FARC negotiators at a long table by Norwegian and Cuban diplomats who have acted as facilitators, looked bored and slightly annoyed, some crossing their arms, others propping up chins with hands.

"There is a great chasm between the two parties that is going to be very difficult to overcome," said political scientist Vicente Torrijos at Bogota's Universidad del Rosario.

Land ownership issues are at the heart of Colombia's conflict, which is fueled by cocaine trafficking and aggravated by far-right militias that have colluded with a military widely questioned for human right abuses. Colombia's most fertile land has been largely concentrated in the hands of cattle ranchers and drug traffickers.

Colombia's president has said he expects the talks to last months, not years, as did the failed 1999-2002 talks that were held in a Switzerland-sized safe haven. Santos ruled out a safe haven this time and rejected FARC's request for a cease-fire.

"The government has said it is not a hostage to this process," De la Calle noted. Santos has said he will break off negotiations unless there is measurable progress.

The Norway talks focused chiefly on logistics, and De la Calle said his delegation would return to Colombia on Friday after just two days in the Scandinavian country. A key member of its five-man negotiating team, former police director Oscar Naranjo, did not even attend.

A road map for the talks was signed in August following six months of secret negotiations in Cuba with the participation of that country's communist government and the Norwegians.

They will be joined at the talks in Cuba by delegates from Chile and Venezuela, the latter of which has long been used as a refuge by FARC fighters. The facilitators' exact role has not yet been explained.

This week's negotiations were to have begun in the first half of October but were delayed by the red tape of suspending arrest warrants for rebel leaders and a dispute over the FARC's last-minute naming of a polyglot Dutch female guerrilla, Tanja Nijmeijer, to its delegation over government objections.

A U.S. arrest warrant for Nijmeijer on hostage-taking and terrorism charges was not suspended. She was not in Oslo. De la Calle said she would join the rebel delegation in Cuba.

Also absent was one of the five men named to the FARC's team of top negotiators: Ricardo Palmera, who is better known by his nom-de-guerre Simon Trinidad.

He is in solitary confinement at a maximum-security U.S. prison after being convicted in 2008 of conspiracy to kidnap three U.S. military contractors. They were held by the rebels for five years after their surveillance plane crashed in guerrilla-held territory, and were rescued that same year along with the presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt.

The rebel negotiators put a name tag for Trinidad, 62, at their end of the news conference's long table, after De la Calle said his participation "is not contemplated." Other Colombian officials had said he could possibly join the talks by videoconference. U.S. officials say they have received no request for that.

In his remarks, De la Calle expressed a willingness to compromise that has been characteristic of the Santos government.

"The government acknowledges that there are unjust social differences," he said. "We want to embark on a road to social change." Such language upsets Colombia's political right, including its standard-bearer, Alvaro Uribe.

President in 2002-2010, Uribe said Thursday that Marquez's speech was just one more instance of the rebels "mistreating the Colombian people, insulting them and trying to explain away (their) crimes."

Santos, who was Uribe's defense minister in 2006-2009, is a social progressive by contrast and has been applauded by the FARC for launching efforts to return stolen land.

Colombia is a nation of deep social inequalities and rampant human rights violations. It leads the world in union leader killings and has hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people.

De la Calle expressed displeasure at what he considered an attempt by Marquez to broaden the peace talks from an agreed upon five-point agenda with a blanket indictment of everything from capitalism to genetically modified seeds.

"We are not discussing the economic model. We are not discussing international investment," De la Calle said.

He said that after the FARC signs a peace accord, it can enter politics and try to win elections and enact change peacefully.

That prompted rebel delegate Jesus Santrich to comment: "Relax, we're only just starting."

Analyst Adam Isacson at the Washington Office on Latin America called the talks' launch notable for "an atmosphere of seriousness and discipline, and appearance that both sides are committed."

He said it was important for Marquez not to give the impression that the rebels are capitulating. The FARC has been seriously weakened in the past decade, reduced to about 9,000 fighters, as Colombia's military bulked up and gained effectiveness with the help of billions in U.S. aid.

Marquez's discourse was "similar to that of some politicians on Colombia's left who reject the FARC's violent ways," Isacson said. Indeed, the leftist presidents who lead Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela have all publicly urged the FARC to abandon its armed struggle and embrace democracy.

In addition to agrarian reform, the talks are to focus on full political rights for the peasant-based rebels once an agreement is signed and they disarm. The FARC would also get out of illegal narcotics, and restitution would be set for victims of the conflict.

One of the prickliest issues is what to do with combatants on both sides who are guilty of war crimes. A Colombian law passed in July contemplates amnesties and pardons, but groups including Human Rights Watch say anyone guilty of crimes against humanity should be brought to justice and punished.

Their importance will be dictated by their weight and efficiency. We thought you?d be interested in a lightweight alternative to the electric battery that is being tested this week at Road Atlanta.

This Saturday at the 10 Hour Petit Le Mans road race, Dyson Racing will be using a new mechanical hybrid energy storage system in their #16 Lola Mazda prototype. While most people think of electric motors and batteries when they hear the term hybrid energy storage, the system selected by Dyson racing is completely different.

The mechanical system, which is being developed by a British company Flybrid Automotive Limited, www.flybrid.co.uk is a lightweight unit that is located in-line between the race car engine and the transmission.

As in all vehicle energy storage systems, the energy produced by slowing the vehicle is captured and released when the vehicle accelerates. The advantage of the Flybrid mechanical system, also called a KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), is its simplicity as compared to an electrical battery system. Inertia energy is directly transmitted to the flywheel, which spins up to 60,000 rpm, and released back as torque through the existing transmission of the vehicle (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Flybrid Energy Storage System

Figure 2: Electrical Energy Storage System: Simplified Design

?

In comparison, an electrical energy storage system requires at least one electrical generator/motor and a battery pack (Figure 2). Without these additional components the Flybrid system weighs only 80 lbs. A comparable electrical storage system would weigh about 2.5 times or approximately 200 lbs.

In the Dyson Racing Team garage at Road Atlanta, we spoke with Tobias Knichel, Commercial Manager of Flybrid about the design of the system, its commercial potential, and why they have chosen ?Green Racing? for product development.

The Flybrid system used in the Dyson racer is not specifically built for that car but is instead a prototype 100 KW (134 hp) unit that is sized for a number of different racing or road going vehicles.

Tobias explained this is possible because total captured inertia energy is produced by the speed and mass of a vehicle. So, while a racing vehicle like the Dyson Lola may be stopped from 180 mph it weighs considerably less than a ton (2,000 lbs). On the other hand while a SUV may be stopping from only 70 mph, it may weigh 2.5 tons (5,000 lb) loaded. Therefore, Tobias said, by adjusting the clutches and the gear ratios in the Flybrid system, the same unit could be used in everything from a race car to a city bus.

In addition, the design of the flywheel can be optimized for capturing inertia energy by adjusting its proportions to the braking rate of the target vehicle. Basically, a vehicle with a slower braking rate requires a flywheel that can spin up quickly with little energy input because that vehicle produces stopping inertia energy at a low but continuous rate.

Flybrid is currently working with both car and bus manufacturers on the commercial use of their KERS system. Jaguar is among a number of companies that have prototype units installed in test vehicles.

On the bus side, they are developing the units to be retrofitted into existing English diesel powered city buses. One version combines two 2 100 Kw flywheel units that feed into one clutch/transmission unit.

We asked Tobias why Flybrid was so involved with racing. He pointed out that racing miles are much more stressful on equipment than road miles, about 10 times as much per mile. Therefore, for Flybrid this allows them to greatly shorten their development cycles. He said this was important since they have set 2016 as their goal for having units in fully-warranted production vehicles.

We later spoke with Chris Dyson who drives the #16 racer and is deeply involved in the operation of the family-owned race team. He said Dyson Racing is using the Flybrid system to not only win races but also to show the importance that racing can have for all automotive development.

Dyson said they are happy to be on the edge of testing this new technology. ?We?re hot-rodders after all,? he said.

Dyson emphasized that use of the Flybrid is not just a three-race deal. It will be in their racers in 2013 and for them it?s a long-term commitment to the future of automotive technology.

As for the research and development of the Flybrid system, the first race at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in September was not successful. Dyson said Flybrid?s dynamometer simulation was not able to model some situations encountered at VIR. ?However, he said, Flybrid responded quickly. The changes have been made and they are optimistic for Saturday?s race. (They were second fastest in practice on Thursday.)

The fact that Dyson Racing is at the forefront of developing this mechanical hybrid system in long duration road races should not be a surprise to followers of Green Racing. Dyson Racing introduced the advanced biofuel bio-isobutanol to racing in 2009 and won the first race on that fuel in 2010 at Mid-Ohio.

The 1,000 mile Petit Le Mans starts at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 20th. Check www.alms.com for details.

Stewart: Romney binder a 'Notebook of Nipples'

By Craig Berman, NBC News contributor

Jon Stewart wasted no time leaping on Tuesday night's Presidential Debates on "Daily Show" Wednesday -- and he picked two of the most obvious soundbites from the debates to skewer: First, Mitt Romney's?infamous comment about getting ?binders full of women? qualified for jobs when he was governor of Massachusetts.?Stewart played the clip, arranged the papers on his desk, paused, and smiled.

?Couple of things: One the women?s group was called MassGAP and they approached Governor Romney, not the other way around. And two, my guess is they did not refer to what they presented as a binder full of women, but perhaps as an organized collection of qualified resumes,? Stewart said. ?But hey, Binder of Women, Book of Broads, Notebook of Nipples, whatever.?

He had more fun with the Libya discussion, which centered on determining the exact day President Obama first referred to it as an act of terror. Watching Romney walk into a trap of his own devising was almost too good for Stewart to talk about, particularly given that Obama urged him to "please, proceed."

?There?s your first clue -- when you feel you?re about you?re about to spring what you think is the checkmate moment of the debate and your debate opponent says to you, ?Please proceed. Hold on, are you trying to open that door? Allow me to open it wider,?? Stewart said. ?When your opponent does that, you may want to wonder a la Wile E Coyote and Road Runner, (whether) that door your opponent is pointing to is merely paint on a rock.?

From Stewart?s perspective, that?s exactly what it was. It should make Thursday?s interview with President Obama less awkward than it would have been a week ago, when Stewart was still focused on his less-robust performance in the first debate. Odds are good, however, that this will still come up in that conversation.

Stephen Colbert also had some thoughts, although he first told his viewers: ?If you?re an undecided voter who did not watch, just trust me, it?s 2-0.?

Like Stewart, he considered the Libya comment a turning point -- but wasn?t as happy with the outcome. ?No, no ... it?s supposed to change everything the other way!? he said.? ?That should have been Mitt?s moment of chest-thumping dominance over the carcass of his opponent, and it would have been too had it not been for that meddling moderator.?

In that latter comment, he echoed the Fox News spin, which also decried Candy Crowley?s purported fact-checking, which they argued should have taken place only after the event.

?Yes, the time for fact-checking is after the event, when voters have stopped watching,? Colbert said.

He was also sympathetic towards the Fox criticism of the ?random? questions. ?Why are we talking about Lady Issues in the Town Hall? Save it for the Sadie Hawkins debate when the girls are supposed to do the asking.?

And don?t get him started on assault weapons, or Romney?s spin that two-parent households could help solve the problem.

?The answer to gun violence isn?t getting rid of assault weapon, its two-parent households,? Colbert said. ?Because when a psychopath marches into the mall in Kevlar body armor, slowly lifting the laser site of his Ak-47 towards the Sunglass Hut, the only thing that will stop him from carnage is when he asks himself what would mom and dad think??

And having learned that people on the street will opine on anything if a microphone is in front of them, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" again sent roving reporters out to talk to people not just about a debate that hadn't happened yet (as they did last night, before the second presidential debates even started) -- but on one that would never exist: A First Ladies debate between Ann Romney and Michelle Obama. Naturally, everyone they spoke to was well-informed and happy to talk about who did the best in that particular debate.?

Decreased gene activity is likely involved in childhood risk for anxiety and depression

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Decreased activity of a group of genes may explain why in young children the "fear center" of the anxious brain can't learn to distinguish real threats from the imaginary, according to a new University of Wisconsin study.

The study, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), lays out evidence that young primates with highly anxious temperaments have decreased activity of specific genes within the amygdala, the brain's fear center. The authors hypothesize that this may result in over activity of the brain circuit that leads to higher risk for developing disabling anxiety and depression.

This may be particularly important since the genes involved play a major role in forming the brain connections needed for learning about fears. While all children have fears and anxieties, the authors suggest that children with low levels of activity of these genes develop anxious dispositions because they fail to learn to cope by overcoming their early childhood fears.

"Working with my close collaborator and graduate student, Drew Fox, we focused on understanding the function of genes that promote learning and plasticity in the amygdala," says Dr. Ned H. Kalin, chair of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, who led the research. "We found reduced activity in key genes that could impair the ability to sculpt the brain, resulting in a failure to develop the capacity to discriminate between real and imaginary fears."

Kalin says the study helps support the need for early intervention in children identified as excessively shy and anxious. It may also point a way to better treatments aimed at decreasing the likelihood of children developing more severe psychiatric problems. Anxiety in children is quite common and can lead to anxiety and depression in adolescence and often precedes anxiety disorders, depression and substance abuse in adults.

Most small children go through a phase when they're frightened of many things, including monsters or new social situations, Kalin says, but their maturing brains soon learn to distinguish real threats from the imaginary. But some children do not adapt, generalize their fears to numerous situations, and may later develop serious anxiety and mood disorders. These children tend to be more sensitive to stress, produce more stress hormones and have heightened nervous-system activity.

Kalin, Fox and co-authors wondered whether some differences in the developing amygdala prevent it from learning how to regulate and adapt to anxiety. Kalin's earlier work identified a subset of young monkeys, similar to extremely shy children, with an inherited anxious disposition. Using brain imaging, the authors showed that high levels of amygdala activity predicted trait-like anxiety in anxious young primates. Like their stable and enduring anxious dispositions, these individuals also had chronically elevated levels of amygdala activity.

"We believe that this pinpoints a critical region in the brain that determines an individual's level of trait anxiety,'' Kalin explains.

In examining a specific part of the amygdala, the central nucleus, the researchers analyzed gene expression, which reflects both environmental and inherited influences. Within the central nucleus of the amygdala the authors found that anxious individuals tended to have decreased expression of a gene called neurotrophic tyrosine kinase, receptor, type 3 (NTRK3). Low levels of this gene that encodes for a brain cell surface receptor may be why the amygdala of an anxious monkey or child is chronically overactive and unable to overcome anxiety and fears.

"This is the first demonstration that the early risk to develop anxiety and depression may be related to the underactivity of particular genes in the developing primate amygdala,'' Kalin says. "These findings have provided the basis for our hypothesis that can explain the early childhood risk to develop anxiety and depression. It also suggests some creative ways to help children with extreme anxiety by developing new treatments focused on increasing the activity of specific genes involved in facilitating the brain development that underlies fear learning and coping."

Lead author on the paper was Kalin's graduate student Andrew Fox. Other authors include Dr. Jonathan Oler, Steven Shelton, Dr. Steven Nanda, Dr. Richard Davidson and Dr. Patrick Roseboom, all of the University of Wisconsin.

The work was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the UW HealthEmotions Research Institute.
